About Us

The Yarn Cake was Scotland’s first dedicated knitting café, combining two of life’s finest pleasures under one roof: yarn and cake!

We opened our wee shop in Glasgow’s West End in October 2010 to much acclaim, providing the knitters of Glasgow with a tiny oasis of calm to knit, chat, shop and eat. Our customers are a wonderful, generous and creative bunch of individuals, and we really wouldn’t have got here without their support, feedback and loyalty!

We are very proud to have been nominated in the British Knitting Awards every year since 2013, winning the "Best Independent Yarn Shop - Scotland" category three times, most recently in 2020.

The founding principles of The Yarn Cake are to supply knitters with a good range of good quality affordable yarns and a wide selection of British yarns, both commercial and indy dyed, as well as a good selection of needles, notions and Ashford spinning supplies; coupled with a welcoming selection of German home-baking, teas, coffees and and regular events to bring together Glasgow's knitting and crafting community; we run a weekly knitting group and our annual anniversary event, The Glasgow School of Yarn.

Whether you're a crafter or a cake lover (or both!), our friendly and experienced team are always on hand to help. We are open five days a week (Tuesday to Sunday) from 10am, with late opening for knit night on Thursdays until 9pm.

We are easily accessible by public transport and on-street parking is available (paid parking from August 2022).

  • Antje outside her shop in the West End of Glasgow

    Antje Karl

Antje started The Yarn Cake with the goal of making good-quality yarn accessible to a wider audience and to create a space for knitters to come together. Twelve years later she is still working away with that dream in mind and we daresay she has been rather successful!

  • Our current staff members

    Our Staff

Our staff are the most fabulous group of fibre enthusiasts you could hope to meet! We're all experienced fibre crafters and love nothing more than to help you pick the perfect yarn for your next project! We're also trained baristas, so you're in good hands if you're popping into the Knitting Nook for a coffee, too!

  • The Yarn Shop Pets

We love our pets here at The Yarn Cake. Merlin (top left) came first, then Ragnar (bottom left) became a minor internet celebrity through lockdown. Now we welcome the newest member, Mungo the Yarn Hound. He's pretty chilled out and very friendly, so you're welcome to give him a little scritch behind the ears when he's in.

Equality Statement

We are committed to making The Yarn Cake an inclusive environment for all, all year round. We believe that everyone should have the same opportunities regardless of background, ability or identity. The knitting community is incredibly diverse and welcomes everyone. As such we will not tolerate abuse or discrimination towards customers or staff. We also believe in backing up our words with action and in the past we have donated to charities such as Refuweegee, LGBT Unity and have been involved with events with The Princes Foundation. We are also a Living Wage Employer and recently got name and pronoun badges for all our staff members. We are a safe space for everyone!
