About Us

The Yarn Cake is Scotland’s dedicated knitting café, combining two of life’s finest pleasures under one roof: yarn and cake.

We opened our wee shop in Glasgow’s West End in October 2010, providing the crafters of Glasgow with an oasis of calm to knit, chat, shop and relax. In May 2023, we moved into bigger and better premises on Crow Road.  Our customers are a wonderful, generous, and creative bunch of individuals, and we wouldn’t have got here without their support, feedback and loyalty!

We are very proud to have been nominated in the British Knitting Awards every year since 2013 until they closed in 2022, winning the "Best Independent Yarn Shop - Scotland" category three times, most recently in 2020.

The founding principles of The Yarn Cake are to supply crafters with a range of good quality, affordable yarns, and champion predominantly British and local yarns where possible. We stock a wide selection of yarns, tools, accessories and notions, ranging from garment care to lovely project bags and more. We cater to Knitters, Crocheters, Spinners, and Needle Felters.

Community is at the heart of what we do, so we host regular events to bring together Glasgow's crafting community. This includes (but isn't limited to) a weekly knitting group, a variety of classes, monthly special events and our annual event, The Glasgow School of Yarn. We're very excited by the opportunities we have with our new home on Crow Road; if you want to keep up to date with what's going on, you can follow us on social media @Theyarncake on instagram and Facebook. We also have a mailing list which you can subscribe to at the bottom of this page.

Whether you are a crafter or a cake lover (or both!), our friendly and experienced team is always on hand to help. We are open 6 days a week, Tuesday to Sunday and you can find our hours on our homepage. Opening hours do change during the winter and summer holidays, so check our Instagram and website before you visit.

We are easily accessible by bus, train and subway, and free on-street parking is readily available.

  • Antje outside the shiny new Crow Road Shop!

    Antje Karl

Antje founded The Yarn Cake in 2010 with the goal of making
good-quality yarn accessible to a wider audience, and creating a space for crafters to come together. She continues to work tirelessly to bring you the best range of affordable natural fibres around!

  • Our Staff

We're all experienced fibre crafters, and are on hand to help with everything from troubleshooting your project to making you top quality beverages. We've got you covered!

  • The Yarn Shop Pets

We love our pets here at The Yarn Cake. Merlin (top left) came first, then Ragnar (bottom left) became a minor internet celebrity through lockdown. Now we have Mungo the Yarn Hound! He's pretty chilled out and very friendly, so you might find him relaxing by the sofa from time to time.

Equality Statement

We are committed to making The Yarn Cake an inclusive environment for all, all year round. We believe that everyone should have the same opportunities regardless of background, ability or identity. The knitting community is incredibly diverse and welcomes everyone. As such we will not tolerate abuse or discrimination towards customers or staff. We also believe in backing up our words with action and in the past we have donated to charities such as Refuweegee, LGBT Unity and have been involved with events with The Princes Foundation. We are also a Living Wage Employer and have name and pronoun badges for all our staff members. We are a safe space for everyone!
